Julie, a lonely fourteen-year old, moves to the Oregon seaside after her father loses his job. Her family has trouble adjusting to life in a small town. Julie's parents struggle with her father's unemployment and her sister finds solace in a summer fling with Tom, a not-too-bright local logger. Her Grandpa and his Indian friend, Standing Elk, seem to be the only ones with time for Julie.

The tale begins with Julie's dramatic mystical encounter with a large Elk on the beach where she finds an old Spanish gold coin. The Elk becomes Julie's watchful guide as she becomes fascinated by the legend of the Tillamook Treasure. Four hundred years ago, so the legend goes, Spanish explorers buried a chest of gold on a seaside mountain. A Slave was killed and buried with the treasure to frighten away the Indians. The legend also tells of an elk, saved from drowning by the slave. Treasure hunters have searched ever since.

Julie looks for the buried gold and in the process she discovers more than she's bargained for including the spirit of the slave. Magic realism and a mystical myth, based on a real Oregon legend, create an enchanting and humorous tale.

Most of all, The Tillamook Treasure is the story of a young girl's adventure in the most intriguing summer of her life. Julie rediscovers the real treasure she already possesses - her family.
